The cable car in Fira started operating in 1982, built upon funding by ship owner Evangelos Nomikos, spending over 140 million greek drachmas (approximately 411.000 €). Not only did he construct this very important manufacture, but also handed over all rights of use and revenues generated arising from its use to the Municipality of Thera and to the communities of the island. The cable car connects the town of Fira with the old port or Gialos (Fira Cove), where cruise ships anchor and their passengers use it to visit Fira and return.
The cable car is manufactured by Doppelmayr Cable Car, according to Austrian standards and regulations and can carry up to 1.200 passengers per hour, built at an altitude of 220 meters from sea level. The ride lasts 3 minutes.
